Fulton Bag and Cotton Mills is a former Mill complex in operation in the Cabbagetown near Atlanta, Georgia. The construction of the plant began in 1881 on the south side of the Georgia Railroad line, east of downtown Atlanta, on the website of Atlanta Rolling mill. The site is now a mixed-income community as lofts, known as the batch used on the Boulevard.
Early history
The beginnings of the Fulton Bag and Cotton Mills can be traced back to Atlanta in 1868, when Jacob Elsas, a German-Jewish immigrants from descent who recently arrived in Atlanta from Cincinnati had started work in the city in the rag, paper and hide business. Elsa soon recognized the necessity of his surroundings and other companies for cloth and paper containers, their goods home. Within two or three years, Elsa's was the new business of manufacturing cloth and paper bags on and had allied himself with fellow German-Jewish Immigrant Isaac May In January 1872 the new company was known as Alsace, May and Company. In the former Atlanta slave market house, the company expanded in the 1870s, until the end of the decade, the company was a bleaching, printing and bag mill, and it employs 100-160 people, including women and children.
The Construction on the current site
began after receiving financial support from Cincinnati banker Lewis Season Good, The company is building a new complex of buildings on the south side the Georgia Railroad line, east of downtown. By 1881 the company had become known as the Fulton Cotton Spinning Company, adding a bag factory to the new site in 1882. Until the late 1880s, the partnership between Jacob Elsas and Isaac May had broken off. Part of the company to the Elsa, Mai Paper Company developed and the other from led Jacob Elsas and incorporated in 1889, became the Fulton Bag and Cotton Mill Company.
Within a few years it was the capacity of the existing building which outgrown in the construction of a second mill on the site in Atlanta in 1895, with more than 40,000 spindles. A third mill has 50,000 spindles additional of 1907. Beyond a neighboring village with housing for the mill workers was set up by the turn of the twentieth century. Bag plants in New Orleans and St. Louis were in the 1890s purchased and taken mills in New York and Dallas in operation in the early years of the twentieth century. Additional plants in Minneapolis and Kansas City have been during and after the First World War, and one in Denver, was recorded in 1945, established at the end of World War II. Expansion of the Atlanta plant also continued in the first half of the twentieth Century offices, two warehouses and several Picker building were built in these years, and Jacob Elsas clinic and nursery school was founded in the early 1940s.
Strikes
Despite the early prosperity of the Fulton Bag and Cotton Mills, was the company through turbulent times of division of labor unrest. A wage dispute resulted in a two-day Strike in November 1885. A second brief strike occurred in August 1897, when white workers protested the hiring of black women. Strike of 1897 was settled after five days. A longer strike took place in 1914-1915, caused by the management of disapproval of the growing efforts among the workers in the United Textile Workers join. Besides the question of unionization, the strikers demanded an increase in wages, a 54-hour week, and a decline in the use of child labor. The strike gained national notoriety when it drew the attention of the newly formed U.S. Commission on Industrial Relations, the representative sent to Atlanta to witness statements in March to collect 1915th The strike ultimately failed in May of this year.
The family Elsas
Many of Jacob Elsas' large family assumed management roles in Atlanta and in the other locations of the company. After his retirement at the age of 70, Jacob turned the chairmanship of the company, his son Oscar in 1914. Sons Victor, Louis, David worked in New Orleans, New York and Dallas, respectively. Another son, Benjamin, succeeded as president of the company's Oscar in 1924. In 1942, a grandson, Norman Elsa's, took over the chairmanship of the company, followed by a second grandson, William Elsas, who served briefly as president in 1950. After the sudden death of William, Clarence Elsas, also a grandson, took over the presidency in 1951. Clarence Elsas served as president until 1956 and again in the position of 1960 to 1968.
